This study describes the way in which Russian émigré writer Mark Aldanov (1889-1957) one of the most renowned writers of his times, who was famous for historical fiction perceived Leo Tolstoy s ideas and reflected them in his work. During the Soviet period, Aldanov was banned in Russia and did not attract scholarly interest beyond the West. Although Russian doctoral candidates have recently started defending PhD dissertations in studies of Aldanov, they still lag behind their Western colleagues and have duplicated some work of American students. The comparative analysis of Aldanov s works devoted to Tolstoy to those of I. Bunin, V. Maklakov, N. Berdjajev and other of his contemporaries enables us to reconstruct the Tolstoy myth that existed in exile and which played a major role in emigrants self-consciousness.
